If you follow Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed on social media, you know he’s always putting up photos of his adventures. From epic bike trips to horse racing and extreme sports, we’re all little jealous of the talents and lifestyle of Dubai’s crown prince.

You’ll also notice that Prince Hamdan definitely has a strong love for animals and he takes every opportunity he can to share photos of himself with them. They range from the exotic to mundane house pets and everything in between.

1. From pictures with ordinary cats…

2. To baby wild cats…

3. And this little tiger that loves smartphones

4. And big cats too!

5. He’s also an avid horse lover

6. You can definitely see the love

7. He makes friends with elephants easily

8. It’s an intimate friendship…

9. Sometimes he hangs out with giraffes, just to chill

10. And since he’s from the UAE, he has at least a few falcon friends

11. One time he even saved a fish. They quickly became friends

12. Sometimes, when animals model for him, he’ll show them how their photos turned out

13. The animals love him right back…

14. And why wouldn’t they?

No one knows why Uber, Careem suspended service in Abu Dhabi

Taxi-hailing services Careem and Uber suspended operations Saturday in Abu Dhabi – without any explanation.

The rival companies, which both began operating in Abu Dhabi in 2013, have acknowledged the temporary shutdown in in-app messages to users but have not explained why they suspended service or said when they expect to resume operations.

“This is a temporary suspension and we will let you know of any further updates,” an Uber spokesman in Dubai told Reuters.

Both companies are still operating in the neighboring emirate of Dubai.

The National quoted Careem as saying that they were working with Abu Dhabi’s taxi regulator on the issue.

“Due to some unforeseen circumstances, we expect potential service interruptions in Abu Dhabi over the next few days,” the company said. “We work with licensed vehicles in Abu Dhabi and we are working closely with TransAD to ensure both a reliable service and adherence to fleet requirements.”

StepFeed has reached out to both companies for comment.

Fake Emirates page with ‘free first class’ tickets scams over 30,000 people

Facebook page ‘Emirates Air’ has fooled thousands of people into believing they will be getting free first class flights for an entire year on the Dubai-based carrier Emirates Airlines.

Emirates Airline has since had the fake page removed, redirecting users to their official page.

The fake Facebook page was created on Aug. 26, using official branding of the Dubai-based carrier, garnering 33,000 likes on Facebook, according to Arabian Business.

The page claimed to offer the first 2,000 people to share, like and comment “thank you” before clicking on a link that leads to a Facebook application, free first class flights for an entire year.

The page also put up another competition for first class tickets with $5,000 spending money.

“The recent competition on Facebook offering free flights is a hoax and has nothing to do with Emirates,” an Emirates spokesperson told Arabian Business.

“Our competitions are always run from our officially verified social media channels. Emirates has been working with Facebook to have these pages removed.”

This isn’t the first time this year customers have been disappointed by too-good-to-be-true offers with Emirates.

Earlier this year, 300 people reportedly snapped up $200 tickets on Emirates between Australia and Brazil, which the airline blamed on a system error on its website. Emirates had cancelled all bookings made during the error as the fares were estimated to be less than a tenth of the normal price.

Dubai’s ruler paid a surprise visit to gov’t offices, and he wasn’t pleased

Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is a man that champions vigor, detail and discipline. So when he made an unannounced visit to some government offices this week, and found empty desks at the start of the work day, he was less than pleased, to say the least.

“Mohammed Bin Rashid went on a civil tour of government offices in Dubai this morning with the start of the work day. These were Dubai’s municipality, the Land Department, and the Economic Development Department and its administration,” wrote head of Dubai government protocol Khalifa Saeed on Instagram Sunday.

“Senior staff were absent,” he added.

It is 7:30 am and the Sheikh is seen walking with slow, determined strides into an office where his own framed photograph sits on a table. It is eerily empty and Sheikh Mohammed doesn’t need to say a thing to show his displeasure. It is a deafening silence punctuated by the Sheikh’s footsteps.

In the second video, a fleeting, knowing nod at a framed photograph of him on the wall is as close as we get to Sheikh Mohammed really saying anything about the office no-shows. But it spoke volumes. Demonstrate your allegiance to Dubai in action rather than in the photos that adorn your walls, he seemed to say.

Another video shows him entering a more ostentatious office. It is decked out with a conference table, an 42″ iMac monitor, and again, an image of him alongside UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The video, which was released on Twitter, showed that managerial staff would not be spared Sheikh Mohammed’s silent reproach.

The 67-year-old ruler of Dubai and vice-president of the UAE is well-known for upholding attention to detail and strict work ethic.

Dubai saw many of these sorts of surprise visits from Sheikh Maktoum in the 1980s and 90s. It is efforts like this to promote high standards in workplace culture that are credited to Dubai’s supersonic transformation from a desert city to a glistening corporate capital.

Crackdown on Abu Dhabi limo drivers behind Uber, Careem suspension

A crackdown on limo drivers in Abu Dhabi – with as many as 50 reportedly being detained over the weekend – is behind the suspension of taxi-hailing apps Uber and Careem in the emirate.

The rivals both suspended service on Saturday without any explanation.

The National quoted a manager of a private limousine company which contracts out for the companies as saying that a number of the firm’s drivers were jailed over the weekend.

“One of our drivers was put in jail at the weekend and it’s happened with loads of drivers from other limousine companies as well,” the unnamed manager told The National. “There’s a lot of confusion as to why they were arrested. We haven’t been able to see them or speak to them yet.”

The paper quoted Careem Vice President Christian Eid as saying his company suspended service due to the lack of available drivers.

“A number of the limousine companies we work with had their drivers stopped, with the result being that the companies decided to go offline on Saturday out of nervousness and lack of clarity,” said Eid told The National.

It is unclear why the drivers were detained, however Uber told StepFeed that no drivers were detained while using its app.

While the two companies are popularly known as taxi services, in the UAE they are actually restricted to contracting out rides to licensed private limousine services. The services must follow the rates for limousine services – which are set higher than the official taxi providers.

Both companies have said they are working to clear up the confusion and resume services. Meanwhile, customers are left scrambling to remember how they used taxis before the apps took over.

This song is for every Lebanese person moving to Dubai

Lebanese composer Jean-Marie Riachi just released a new anthem for Lebanese people looking to move to Dubai, a city that’s become home away from home for thousands of Lebanese.

The song has garnered over 15,000 views on Youtube so far.

In the animated video, a man gets ready to board his flight to Dubai after receiving a message from his “bibi” wishing him safe travels

Capture

The music video highlights the fact that a majority of Lebanese people leave the country seeking a future, with Dubai being their chance at a fresh new start.

And of course, there’s the obligatory hundred bags of “bzourat”

Capture

Because is there anything better than Lebanon’s bizir?

Upon arrival, he realizes just how intense Dubai’s heat really is

Capture

But, everything is air-conditioned, like all the time!

And struggles to keep in touch with people back home…

Capture

Because internet struggles in Lebanon are just too much?

But, as with all things, it just takes some getting used to!

Of course, you will realize certain things after moving to the city, as soon as one day later.

Women’s empowerment in the UAE is incredible; these 8 facts prove it

From Shaikha Lubna Al-Qasimi, Minister of State for Tolerance and developer of the cargo system at Dubai airport, to pilot Mariam Al-Mansouri, who directed a mission against ISIS last year, Emirati women have been empowering each other, breaking barriers and accelerating the UAE’s development, and these facts prove it.

The United Arab Emirates celebrated the second-ever annual Emirati women’s day on Sunday.

The tribute was first introduced in 2015 to honor women serving in the nation’s military. It coincides with anniversary of the General Women’s Union, dedicated to empowering Emirati women and founded in 1975.

Founder of the UAE Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had put women at the center of his plan to develop the nation. “The woman is half of the society, any country which pursues development should not leave her in poverty or illiteracy. I am on the woman’s side,” he said.

The late Sheikh’s plan is on the right track, needless to say.

1. Two-thirds of governmental employees are female

In 2015, 30% of UAE’s governmental decision-making positions were held by women, the highest in the Arab world.

2. The first Arab woman to ever chair a national assembly…yup, you guessed it. She’s Emirati

Dr. Amal Al-Qubaisi became the first Arab woman to head a national assembly when she was appointed President of the Federal National Council.

3. 43% of employed females are university graduates

As opposed to 23.7% for males, according to Al-Bawaba.

Female Emirati high-school graduates are much more likely to pursue further education than males.

4. Illiteracy among Emirati women dropped by a whopping 82.5% since 1970

According to WhatsOn, the rate was at 89.8 in 1970, compared with the 7.3% recorded last year.

5. Emirati women excel in traditionally male-dominated fields

They’re not afraid to take on the male-dominated fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to International Business Times, a study revealed that 70% of the surveyed female Emirati students are enrolled STEM-related courses.

Better yet, president of the Emirates Scientists Council is a woman, 29-year-old Sara Al-Ameri

6. Women’s labor participation rose by 30.6% in 40 years

Women occupy some of the highest leadership ranks in the nation.

7. The UAE has had a 58% increase in female entrepreneurs…in just 4 years.

The nation currently has around 20,000 female entrepreneurs, marking a 58% increase since 2012, according to WhatsOn.

Emirati women have started all kinds of businesses, from online stores to large-scale companies.

8. The UAE was the first in the region to make female representation in all governmental boards mandatory

Soon, it will also become the first in the region to found a UN Women Liaison Office, an initiative committed to advocating for gender equality.

Dubai’s Green Planet has the world’s largest man-made tree

The Green Planet, a bio-dome designed as an enclosed ecosystem, will feature more than 3,000 plants, animals and birds…alongside the world’s largest indoor, man-made tree.

The tree trunk is artificial, but “each branch has planters packed with tropical flora and fauna,” which will breed a living environment suitable for the species, according to The National.

Porcupines, sloths, snakes are some of the species that you’ll see at the rainforest.

The greenery is gorgeous and lush

The rainforest aims to be the go-to spot for class field trips, teaching students about tropical wildlife.

“This is a living classroom, an experience where anyone can learn about tropical wildlife,” said Eric Hupperts, living exhibits manager and curator at Green Planet, according to The National.

“A visual connection with what children, in particular, are learning about is so much more powerful than in a sterile classroom.”

The forest, located in City Walk, is set to open its doors to the public Sept. 1

If you’re planning on heading over there, make sure to check the entry fees and opening hours before you do on The Green Planet’s website.

Things you need to know before you visit Georgia

Georgia has become one of the most popular destinations on the UAE travel scene over the past year. It’s easy to understand why when you look at the majestic snowy mountains, beautiful Black Sea beaches and lush forests this former Soviet republic has to offer.

So if you’re looking for a place to spend the upcoming Eid break or for a quick escape, here’s what you need to know about Georgia.

1. No visa required

Holders of valid visa or residence permit of UAE are exempted from visa requirements. If you fit that category then you will get your visa upon arrival.

2. Cheap direct flights

For just under AED1500 you can catch a direct flight from Dubai to Tblisi airport! (A dinner at Zuma could cost more than that! What’s even better is that Fly Dubai offers 2 flights a day. The flight takes 3 and half hours.

3. Lots of options for accommodation

In Georgia there is a wide range of hotels from 2 star to 5 star. You can stay in luxury hotels in the middle of Tblisi for very reasonable rates that can be as less as AED1000 per night (breakfast included).

4. An authentic atmosphere

Many cities in Georgia still have an authentic and historical feel about them. Tblisi is catching up with the cosmopolitan wave but still has many areas where you can see small cobbled streets, old buildings from the soviet era, tiny fruit shops and cute little churches.

5. A varied vacation

Whether you want a ski trip, a mountain hike, a stay by a tranquil lake, a beach vacation or a fun weekend where you can visit some casinos, Georgia has you covered. We highly recommend a skiing trip in the Gudauri resort in the heart of the beautiful Caucasus Mountain.

6. The trains are great

You can travel from Tblisi to the coastal city of Batumi by train. The train trip takes around five hours but you won’t feel the time pass because the trains are fast with extremely short stops (you won’t even have a time to light a cigarette), there is also free wifi connection throughout the journey. The best part about the train ride is the beautiful scenery of dense forests and green fields.

7. It’s oh so cheap

Let’s just put it this way: a lunch for four with drinks in the middle of Tbilisi’s Old Town will cost you no more than a AED100! On top of that, the food is amazing. We loved the traditional Khinkali (stuffed dumplings) and Khachapuri (Georgia’s version of manakeesh) at Machakhela in the Old Town.

8. The shopping!

Shopping might not be on your to-do list in Georgia, but the great bargains there will tempt you. We strongly advise browsing around the small shops near Freedom Square in Tbilisi where you will find unique independent shops filled with beautiful and cheap finds from apparel to accessories. Make sure not to leave without a pair of Georgian made shoes. They are fashionable, comfortable, durable and so cheap!

9. It’s ideal for a short break

Georgia is a great option for a long weekend or a quick getaway for couples, friends and families. You can pack lots of activities and sightseeing in 3 or 4 days.

Note: You may get a surprise vaccine shot.

Prepare to take an oral polio vaccine once you arrive in the airport if you have been to countries like Pakistan, Syria, Iraq or Nigeria  in the past 40 days. It is a World Health Organization requirement to prevent the disease from spreading.

Emirati artist recreates the UAE in tiny sketches

Emirati artist Mariam Abbas is changing the way you look at the UAE…with art. Using pencils and fine brushes, her miniature drawings shed light on culture and tradition, and even iconic brands of the UAE in 1990s, in the tiniest way possible.

Her drawings are usually “no bigger than a one-dirham coin,” according to The National.

But for such a small thing, the impact is pretty big.

Here’s a look at some of her UAE-inspired work:

Just look at this tiny version of Musabah Bin Rashid Al Fattan Mosque…

And this colorful take on the historic district of Al Bastakiya

Just some dirhams…

And some more dirhams!

A tiny spin on Al Maghfirah Mosque in Sharjah

A bottle of Vimto…as big as a coin

And the beautiful Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai

Flaunting Emirati pride

That adorable Emirates plane

And of course, The National!

Read Abbas’s full interview with the UAE-based news site here.

The 32-year-old artist showcased some of her work at World Art Dubai, selling drawings of both Jumeirah Mosque and Al Farooq Mosque to a British collector in Dubai.

An Emirati collector has already bought her mini-portrait of Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

New live music spots in Dubai to hit this weekend

$

In Dubai, we’re always on the lookout for a new live music spot, because we know that no night is more memorable than one with a rockin’ performance that hits all the right notes. But with restaurants, bars and lounges mushrooming almost every month, it’s hard to keep track. It’s difficult to parse through them and figure out which of these offer live performances…good ones. Because as we all know too well, going to a bad live performance is one of those things akin to torture. That’s why we are here to help you.

Try these 4 new fantastic venues:

1. Indie – DIFC

DIFC offers an abundance of places to choose from, but if dancing and singing is what you are after then you should choose Indie restaurant and lounge. Off Beat Wednesday’s will have you grooving to the most recent pop songs performed by an energetic band, while munching on eclectic global cuisine and sipping fresh cocktails.

Extra tip: the place is relatively small so booking a table for dinner is essential.

2. Mayta – DIFC

Another great spot in DIFC to enjoy live music is Mayta. This contemporary Peruvian restaurant offers two of the most popular things amongst Dubaians: exotic food and Latin music. You might want to brush up on your salsa moves before heading there on Thursday night.

Extra tip: stop by the nearby LaLuz to get into the Spanish/Latin mood and try some seriously unique cocktails.

3. Lock Stock & Barrel – Grand Millennium Hotel

From happy hour and Friday roasts to meter long flat breads and craft beers, Lock Stock & Barrel has you covered. But the best part about this place is the live band every Monday and Wednesday. We enjoyed the acoustic version of songs from Kings of Leon, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith. It’s an ideal place in Dubai for a rock and roll night!

Extra tip: it’s also a good spot for watching football matches and the English Premier League games.

4. Blue Bar – Novotel World Trade Centre

The venue is not new, but the band is! Every Thursday night you will be transported to vibrant Beirut (minus the power outages and traffic jams) as Talal Kontar and his band take the stage in Blue Bar to perform popular tunes from the Lebanese folklore and Rahbani Brothers’ canon in addition to their original songs. The Libanista night is great to enjoy a night of live Arabic music. There aren’t many nights like these in Dubai.

Extra tip: the place also hosts jazz bands on several days of the week.

UAE upsets Japan in World Cup qualifier

Two Ahmed Khalil goals helped UAE beat Japan 2-1, recording a major upset in the Asian World Cup 2018 qualifiers’ opening match.

Japan opened the scoring at the Saitama Stadium when Keisuke Honda powered a header from the left post past UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa just 11 minutes into the game.

However, Al-Ahli’s star striker and UAE captain Ahmed Khalil managed to bring the scores back level when he scored a super free-kick at the 20th minute mark.

An inspired Emirati side entered the second-half and continued to push forward against the four-time Asian champions.

Khalil, voted best player in Asia last year, converted a penalty-kick in the 54th minute to give the UAE the lead in front of a disenchanted home crowd.

Khalil, the 25-year-old who finished the previous qualifying phase with the second highest goal record after Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Al Sahlawi, had demanded that his teammates treat the match with both caution and courage, urging them to live up to expectations.

A compact UAE defence thwarted Japanese forwards ploughed through hoping to salvage at least a point from the match.

The result gives the UAE three vital points from a difficult opening game, and will surely give coach Mahdi Ali’s men a huge confidence boost ahead of their second match against Australia on September 6 at Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

8 relics of an Abu Dhabi childhood in the 1990s

$
0
0

There ought to be a museum dedicated to Abu Dhabi of the 1990s. It would be a great, off-beat addition to the burgeoning cultural district of Saadiyat island.

Here’s why. Firstly, the 1990s are when Abu Dhabi first started to take shape as a city with varied activities. We saw our first English-speaking cinemas, our first department stores, our first toy stores … we got a window into the world outside of the tiny city via cable TV and dial-up Internet.

Secondly, these “firsts” were nothing short of relics. Back then, we didn’t have 10+ malls to fulfil  our hearts’ desires. We had only one … department store. There were no VOX cinemas, first class seating, no iMAX. We had only one movie theater with two or three Hollywood flicks every month. But we welcomed these new experiences as though they were generous gifts, and we cherished them.

But the defining features of that era have all but disappeared. The iconic volcano mountain has been demolished, the cool sun-set sheesha spots on Kasser el Amwaj are nowhere in sight, and whatever happened to the down-to-earth budget beaches we used to go to with our families, like the old Khalidiya palace?

To help preserve the endangered hallmarks of a generation, we’ve compiled a list of 8 things that marked your Abu Dhabi childhood in the 1990s.

1. Eldorado Cinema

Before Eldorado on Electra street became a Bollywood film cinema, it was Abu Dhabi’s first English-speaking movie theater available to the public. If you are a child of 1990s Abu Dhabi, then the first film you watched on the big screen was most likely The Lion King. You probably braced yourself for the scene when Mufassah fell to his death–the added dramatic effect of the large images and surround sound overwhelmed your sweet heart.

Later as an adolescent, your group of school friends gathered here like a pack of wolves. You hovered around your first crush as you loitered the sidewalks. Finally, you were shooed away by the building’s employees. And…repeat.

2. Chips

abu dhabi childhood

In the 1990s, we didn’t have Lays, Walkers, over-priced Kettle chips and rows upon rows in Lulu Center that look like an international exhibition of potato crisps. No, you had “red sticks”, “blue sticks”, “red square” and “blue square” and a locally produced baked potato chips brand  with the sketch of a yellow girl with crazy hair on the cover and the brand was simply named “Chips.”

3. Hamdan Center

hamdan center old abu dhabi

Hamdan center is the ultimate precursor of Emirati mall culture. The fluorescent light bulbs made us squint as we perused the electronics stores and kitschy clothing shops. It was no Abu Dhabi Mall and Marina Mall where we would come to spend nearly every non-working moment–bringing our daily social get-togethers at home to an abrupt and unfortunate stop–but it was our one-stop shop for non-grocery essentials.

Hamdan Center still exists, but it occupies a slightly less important place in Abu Dhabi living.

4. United Colors of Benetton/Mothercare

When United Colors of Benetton and Mother Care first came to Abu Dhabi, your mama got a new lease on life…cause it meant she didn’t have to keep sewing all your clothes! It also meant you were dressed like at least one other kid in any given room on any given day.

5. The Old Indian Souk

The Indian Souk is probably the single most defining feature of the Old Abu Dhabi landscape, and its removal is a watershed moment between old and new. This is where your parents hunted for the best spices, and found great bargains. It was an authentic experience where a huge migrant community found expression and recreated a little India.

6. Archie Comics

As with every aspect of the 1990s Abu Dhabi shopping experience, bookstores left a lot to be desired. The retail market was small, but strict censors made bookstores even smaller. But then there were Archie comics, and they were great. Many of us spent our pocket money on the newest issues. You had to ask your parents for a “loan” if you wanted a Double Digest.

7. Toys R Us

old abu dhabi 1990s

We didn’t need amusement parks, we had Toys R Us. And when your parents were kind enough to take you on a 20 minute car ride — a significant distance in 1990s tiny Abu Dhabi — then you roamed the rows of toys for hours and hours. If you were lucky, you bought something, but mostly you were happy to be just be surrounded by so much wonder. It was our toys equivalent of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

8. Family & Friends gatherings

In the end, it’s not the commercial stuff that marked our childhoods, but the togetherness that a lack of malls, cinemas, restaurants etc forced us to have. Our parents gatherings were incessant, and they played games that they had us join in on because the atmosphere was filled with cheer. There’s no way to embody this most epic relic of the 1990s, but we cherish the memories.

Kuwait to citizens: clear phones of ‘extremist’ photos before US travel

It’s a tough time to “fly while Muslim.” From people getting kicked off planes for speaking Arabic to people getting arrested for wearing traditional Arab attire, Islamophobia has been a struggle for millions of travelers.

The State of Kuwait doesn’t want its travelers to run any risks, so it’s issuing some pretty unusual–though reasonable–warnings.

The Kuwaiti embassy in Washington has advised its citizens “to make sure their phones do not contain any materials or photos of extremist nature,” prior to traveling to the United States, according to state news agency KUNA.

The warning was described as a precautionary measure to spare the citizens, students included, interrogations by authorities at the airport. These could result in “action against them that could result in cancelling their visas and banning them from entering U.S. territories.”

The embassy also urged citizens to “cooperate fully” with airport officials who request access to electronic devices.

Earlier this year, three Kuwaiti businessmen were interrogated for 21 hours at Los Angeles airport. After getting their phones checked by officials, the three were refused entry to the United States.

In July, an Emirati tourist Ahmed Al Menhali was briefly arrested in Ohio, United States, after a hotel clerk allegedly told family members he was pledging allegiance to ISIS in the lobby. The man was dressed in traditional thobe.

UAE space program rockets forward with $5.45 bn investment

The United Arab Emirates’ plan to send a shuttle to space by 2021 just rocketed forward.

The UAE cabinet ratified the National Space Policy in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum this week. The program will see around DHS20 billion ($5.45 billion) invested in the nation’s space sector.

As part of the UAE Vision 2021, which aims to put the country among the most economically and scientifically progressed in the world by its 50th anniversary, UAE seeks to assert itself as a lead competitor in aerospace. The new National Space Policy is considered to be a centerpiece of the national plan to develop the space sector.

UAE had previously announced plans to create a space agency and send the first Arab mission to Mars by 2021. “The UAE Mars probe represents the Islamic world’s entry into the era of space exploration. We will prove that we are capable of new scientific contributions to humanity,” Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had said.
The program is epected attract foreign investors to UAE and boost its economy. Space technology plays a role in telecommunications, navigation and monitoring weather and natural disasters.

The UAE has been working with NASA and France’s space agency CNES.

“We have the largest regional space transportation operator, the largest international companies providing satellite insurance services, an adequate legislative and regulatory environment, and a variety of research centres, all of which aim to ensure the well-being of our people and the world,” said PM Al Maktoum.

Zayn Malik dumps Dubai … again

Zayn Malik seems to be playing Dubai fans instead of playing for them.

Malik has cancelled his upcoming solo gig in Dubai less than a month before he was set to take the stage at the Autism Rocks Arena

Concert organizer 117Live announced the news.

“I feel I am making progress, but I have today acknowledged that I do not feel sufficiently confident to move forward with the planned show in Dubai in October,” Malik said in a statement.

The former One Direction heart throb blames “extreme anxiety.”

Some made pretty dramatic travel plans

We wish Zayn Malik a speedy recovery, even if he did break our hearts.

In 2015, just weeks before One Direction was headed out for a concert in Dubai (first ever in the Middle East)… Malik left the group.

Although the show went on, Malik did not make an appearance.

The news comes just a week after Selena Gomez cancelled her Dubai concert because of her battle with Lupus. Let’s hope Elton John doesn’t cancel, too.

Sex-change surgery is now legal in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates has just passed a federal decree that introduces substantial changes to healthcare in the Gulf state, and challenges prevailing cultural norms.

Federal Decree No. 4 permits doctors to refrain from resuscitation and to conduct sexual reassignment surgery. These amendments are one of several under Decree No. 4 that reduce doctors’ criminal liability.

Under article 7 of the law governing healthcare, doctors can now perform sex change operations so long as there are “psychological” and “physiological” signs of gender and sex disparity. The law also requires that the patient undergoing sex change surgery receive mental health care to “psychologically prepare” patients for the transition.

The UAE would be the second state in the Arabian Gulf to legalize sex reassignment surgery, after Iran. Certain schools of Islamic jurisprudence recognize transgenderism, and the laws do not necessarily fly in the face of religious teachings. Islam has a long and nuanced history with the subject, which, many argue, is not as straightforward as it might appear at the outset.

Egypt permitted sex change surgery at a watershed moment for the transgender community in 2013 when Egypt’s Doctors’ Syndicate officially recognized “gender identity disorder.”

A landmark ruling in Lebanon this year permitted a transgender person to change genders on their legal identity documents.

“Do Not Resuscitate”

Euthanasia is strictly forbidden in Islam, and many Muslims believe that the “Do Not Resuscitate” order falls under a form of euthanasia.

Looser conditions permit medical staff to refrain from the standard resuscitation procedures by allowing patients suffering from incurable illnesses to die naturally.

If at least three doctors advise against resuscitation, and if all treatment fails, then natural death is permitted.

“Decriminalizing the issue would help to attract the best doctors to the UAE and encourage medical tourism, one of the key elements in Dubai’s future vision for growth,” said Stephen Ballantine, a medical malpractice specialist, according to The National.

The new law not only brings about a revolutionary change to the way health care works in the UAE, breaking through cultural beliefs, but also relieves doctors from criminal liability.

Prior to the new law being passed, doctors who failed to perform CPR on dying patients were liable to prosecution. However, under the new law if a patient refuses treatment or fails to follow medical advice, doctors involved will not be held responsible in court.
